Workshops: Leidsche Rijn
Introduction
Why vertical gardening
We are four students from Utrecht University doing a project regarding Creative Urban Technologies. We are inclined to think of new and innovative ways of improving Leidsche Rijn and in order to finally fulfil this project we came up with a final piece - a workshop which would finally connect everything into one. Workshop appears to be the best option for all of the issues that we came along: lack of activities especially for young people, lack of sense of community and consequences of staying indoors. It attempts to solve community problems that we came across by implementing technology and contributes towards a greener future. However, due to Corona measures, the workshop seems impossible to organise. Yet we are looking forward to times when gatherings will be allowed and we will be able to finish what we have started.

Such workshop will consist of two main elements: people interested in vertical gardening with youth at the fore and an expert willing to teach and ignite the spark of interest. Hopefully, the vision we have in terms of vertical gardening will be self fulfilling and will at least to a lesser or smaller extent come out as efficient.

Final outcome: a communal vertical garden visible to everyone. The more people contribute, the bigger the garden!

Main arguments: There are a lot of sustainable and ecological benefits that come along with growing a vertical garden. Besides the obvious perks of growing plants , like co2 reduction, there are more direct benefits as well. For instance a vertical garden can function as an environmentally friendly climate control system, as its plants can have a cooling effect on the surrounding air, but when its cold outside a vertical garden can also act an insulating wall therefore helping to keep the warmth inside.

Furthermore a vertical garden can help reduce the amount of water needed to grow plants using vertical irrigation, which means that water can be reused by the plants below, and drowning your plants is less likely.

The last main sustainable aspect of our project is that it can be used for people to grow their own foods and micro greens. Doing so counters wastefulness as your crops will not need the pesticides packaging and transportation that are used in large scare agriculture

But hold on!

Based on the research, we have found out that people feel a lack of belonging in Leidsche Rijn but it is foremost children who believe that there needs to be more activities. Therefore, we have came up with a workshop where every participant would contribute towards a greener future and diminish this lack of communal feeling. Beginning with schools, we want to offer a workshop led by an expert sharing experience of vertical gardening with kids.
